The Department
Founded in 1972 as a result of student activism and guided by El Plan de Santa Barbara, the Department of Chicano Studies at the University of Minnesota was the first department of its kind in the Upper Midwest. Our department has evolved to become a Department of Chicano and Latino Studies responding to the ongoing demographic changes occurring in Minnesota and throughout the nation. During our fifty-year history, we have been committed to research, teaching, and service through reciprocal and redistributive relationships with university and off-campus partners. To that end, we offer a rigorous undergraduate degree program that is complemented by extensive civic engagement, outreach efforts, and public programming activities. With only four core faculty at present, we are, however, strengthened by being a part of the Race, Indigeneity, Disability, Gender and Sexuality Studies cluster of units (RIDGS), which have been at the forefront of teaching and advancing research and community engagement about complex issues of identities, histories and systems of power and inequality, and imaginings of social transformation.

As mentioned before, we seek an applicant who is prepared to lead the Department as Chair for at least a three-year term at the start of their hire.
