The Program in Film & Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking to fill a tenure-track appointment in electronic media studies at the level of assistant professor. The position will start in fall 2017 and involves a joint appointment with African and African-American Studies or the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, with 75% of duties in FMS and a 25% appointment in the other academic unit.
We seek candidates with a strong record of qualitative-based scholarly research that centralizes electronic media, whether in the form of television, video games, social media, or the internet. The position requires compelling teaching in undergraduate and graduate courses, the ability to situate electronic media within cultural and historical contexts, and a commitment to vibrant intellectual exchange across disciplinary boundaries. The successful candidate will take primary responsibility for offering FMS’s History of Electronic Media course and advanced seminars such as Theories of Mass Media and Histories of Media Convergence. The normal teaching load is two courses per semester. In addition to teaching, duties of this position include: conducting research and other scholarly activities, including publishing in scholarly journals, performing departmental and university service, and other duties assigned by the University. A PhD in film or media studies or a closely related field, in-hand by the start of the appointment, is required.
