Membership in the American Studies Association provides a range of opportunities for professional, intellectual, and personal development for everyone from graduate students early in their careers to senior scholars, from artists to activists, from geographers and anthropologists to novelists and public historians.

To make participation in the association accessible for everyone, the ASA offers membership at variable rates, determined by household income.

The rates for individual memberships are as follows:

  • Household income under $25,000: $25
  • Household income between $25,001-$50,000: $65
  • Household income between $50,001-$100,000: $95
  • Household income between $75,001-$100,000: $150
  • Household income between $100,001-$125,000: $200
  • Household income over $125,000: $250

All individual memberships expire at the end of the year for which they were paid (for example, if you paid for a 2025 membership, it would expire on December 31, 2025). All membership purchases after December 1 will be for membership for the following year (for example, if you paid for membership on December 2, 2025, if would be for a 2026 membership). This is why we encourage & remind folks to renew their memberships at the beginning of the year. Individual membership terms start from the time of purchase until the end of the calendar year.

Institutional memberships cost $170 and are based on the Fiscal year, starting on July 1 and ending on June 30.

Institutional members help ensure the continuity, development, and enhanced usefulness of a scholarly organization dedicated to broadening and intensifying the study of U.S. culture and history in a global context.

Benefits of Institutional Memberships

In addition to individual benefits of membership, institutional members may nominate up to 10 deserving students (either graduate or undergraduate) and/or contingent (non-tenure stream) faculty from their department or program for a free, one-year, online membership in the ASA. These students and contingent faculty will enjoy all the benefits of an individual ASA membership online, including the opportunity to submit a proposal to the annual meeting and online access to the current and past year’s issues of American Quarterly. Membership will commence in January of the next calendar year. If you have any questions, please email JHUP customer support at ASAsupport<at>jh.edu.

  • Institutional members receive special discounted rates on advertising, job or fellowship postings to the ASA website, and ads for jobs or fellowships in the ASA newsletter.
  • Institutional memberships are $170, payable annually.
  • After you have purchased your institutional membership, please email asastaff<at> theasa.net to submit the names and contact information of your members.

Please note: If your department or program is looking to purchase an institutional membership in order to support 10 students and contingent faculty who may want to submit proposals for the annual meeting, your application must be completed on or before February 6, in order to allow processing time for the March 1 proposal deadline.
