The Department of Geography and the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies (LCS) at Rutgers University invite applicants for a Tenure Track position of Assistant Professor in Latinx Geographies. The search will seek a candidate whose appointment would be split between Geography and LCS and whose teaching and research interests offer innovative theoretical or methodological perspectives. Topical areas might include, for example, carceral geographies, environmental justice, food systems, gender and sexuality, health, housing, labor geography, migration and (im)mobilities, or urbanism. We will give preference to a candidate whose interests complement and build upon the existing profile of Geography and LCS faculty, whose scholarship demonstrates empirical and theoretical rigor, and who uses spatial or other innovative methods. We will also give preference to a candidate who can help diversify our faculty or draw a more diverse student body to our respective disciplines. The candidate will be expected to teach and advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the relevant fields of Geography and Latino and Caribbean Studies. A demonstration of excellence in scholarly research is required.

Rutgers University offers a dynamic and diverse intellectual environment with multiple interdisciplinary centers connected to the study of Latinx populations, including the Rutgers Advanced Institute for Critical Caribbean Studies, the Center for Cultural Analysis, Center for Historical Analysis, Institute for Research on Women, and Center for Social Justice Education and LGBTQIA Communities. Rutgers Geography, founded in 1949, has eleven core and seventeen additional graduate faculty. The department is built on a tradition of critical spatial analysis across the discipline’s subfields and draws from decades of collaboration with area studies and interdisciplinary units on campus, including LCS. LCS currently has thirteen core faculty and thirty faculty affiliates. Founded in 1970, LCS promotes interdisciplinary and transnational approaches to studying how Latinx and Caribbean populations have been and continue to be shaped by legacies of colonialism, slavery, state power, and globalization, as well as social, artistic, and intellectual mobilizations in response to these and other legacies. This joint search builds on growing student interest in exploring Latinx justice in response to contemporary concerns about race and class polarization and fragmentation, resurgent ethno-nationalisms, and environmental vulnerability, globally and in the United States.

Required qualifications: A PhD in Geography or a related field such as American Studies, Anthropology, Chicano/Latino Studies, Environmental Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Urban Studies, or Urban Planning.

Desired qualifications: teaching experience in a college or university setting in Geography or a related discipline; demonstrated capacity to secure external research funding; experience advising graduate students or preparedness to begin such responsibilities.
