NHA Lauds Latest Round of NEH Grants
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Humanities Alliance released the following statement today from its Executive Director Stephen Kidd on the December announcement of $12.8 million in grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support 253 humanities projects nationwide:
“The latest round of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities exemplify the broad and unifying reach of the NEH in communities across the country.
“This recent round of grants will preserve community heritage across the country, enrich humanities courses at community colleges and minority - serving institutions, and tackle intergenerational illiteracy among underserved families. Collectively, NEH grants bridge partisan divides by providing access to the humanities in every state and territory.
“These worthy investments generate public - private partnerships, cutting - edge research, promote teaching and provide lifelong learning opportunities. They create jobs and community hubs in rural and urban areas alike. As a testament to their value, both Republicans and Democrats in Congress have affirmed the value of these programs to their communities in the past year, despite the president’s proposal to shut down the NEH.
“We are immensely proud of the NEH’s impact across the U.S. and will continue advocating for increased federal support for fu ture grants in 2018 and beyond.
Here are a few noteworthy examples in the latest round of NEH grants:
- $100,000 to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, to engage high schoolers in intergenerational communication using digital storytelling tools.
- $50,000 to DeKalb County Public Library System for its PRIME TIME Preschool program.
- $6,000 to Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm for the de velopment of an emergency response plan.
- $100,000 to the Chemical Heritage Foundation to create a game engaging audiences in the history of chemistry and scientific experimentation.
- $50,400 to Cornell College in Iowa to support research on African American domestic servants during the Great Depression.
