Task Forces are formed on a time-limited basis with the purpose of developing resources or defining particular actions the American Studies Assocition can take in support of our members as they engage in American studies teaching, research, collaboration and program or department administration.

Task Forces can be formed organically as a working group comprised of officers of the National Council; they can also be formed at the request of ASA Committees in their reporting to the Executive Committee or during the panel of All Committee Chairs as it convenes each year at the annual meeting.

Contingent Faculty Task Force (2020 - )

The Contingent Faculty Task Force was constituted in the 2019 meeting of the National Council to address how member departments and programs within the field might better support the growing majority of contingent faculty in higher education. Formally launched in Spring 2020, the coalition of tenured and non-tenured ASA members recognized that those working in contingent positions may experience employment instability, demanding course loads, and financial inequality, while often lacking a role in governance that might mitigate these forms of harm.  Read more...

Task Force for American Studies in Higher Education in the U.S. and Globally (2014-2016)

The Task Force, constituted in 2014 based on needs articulated by a wide range of members, program leaders, and committees, was charged with keeping the ASA informed about trends in culture and policy as they impact American studies and its place in higher education, both within the United States and around the world. The primary objective of the Task Force was to make a case for the centrality of American studies within and across contemporary discourses of higher education, civil society, and democracy so as to ensure a vibrant future for the field.  Read more...
