Department of African American Studies

Degrees Awarded: MA (in participation with Masters of Arts in Humanities)

African American Studies involves a range of perspectives that examine the historic and contemporary experiences of African Americans in the contexts of their backgrounds and origins; their presence and role in US history; their participation in American public and cultural affairs; and their relationships to other fragments of the African diaspora in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe. Because the Black experience in America is so rich, the study of African American history and culture provides a body of knowledge that serves as a reference point for understanding American diversity and for relating American history to non-European sources in Africa and elsewhere.

UB’s African American Studies department is engaged in the full complement of the African American experience. This also includes research and studies in the history of slavery, emancipation, reconstruction, and the struggle for civil rights, as well as the teaching of the African American cultural experience in literature, music, and religion. It has well-developed components for the study of ancient civilizations, the slave trade, colonialism, and the post-colonial era in Africa. Caribbean history and literature are other areas that have been the focus of teaching and research in our program. All these are linked together in the department’s active interest in studies of the African Diaspora and its contributions to the spawning of new world cultures.
