The Executive Board of the Mid-America American Studies Association (MAASA) invites proposals for spring, 2009 conferences to groups wishing to organize conferences or /symposia that deal with themes having to do with American culture and society, broadly defined. As a co-sponsoring organization, MAASA will contribute up to $5000 in conference funding to the top proposal.
Non-profit organizations, civic groups, public institutions, universities, undergraduate liberal arts colleges, undergraduate institutions, graduate student organizations, and academic groups located in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin all are eligible to submit proposals. MAASA is particularly interested in proposals that would host events to bring together diverse and underrepresented voices from the community and observers of American culture and society including artists, community activists, public intellectuals, scholars, and teachers. We also welcome proposals that provide opportunities for undergraduate students to learn more about American Studies and that encourage creative presentations as opposed to the traditional panel format.
As co-sponsors of the conference, MAASA requests that a member of its executive board be a member of the conference planning committee, that space be available at the conference for a MAASA board meeting, and that time be allocated for graduate student members of the organization to organize a presentation. MAASA will work with the conference planners to choose the winner of the Katzman-Yetman prize, a $250 award for the best paper/presentation by a graduate student.

* Description of the target audience(s)
* A description of the theme of the event and its relevance to questions integral to studies of American culture and society
* Discussion of anticipated goals and outcomes of the event
