Call for Conference/Symposia proposals

The Executive Board of the Mid-America American Studies Association (MAASA)  invites proposals for conferences or symposia to take place in spring 2011 that are concerned with American culture and society.  As a co-hosting organization, MAASA expects to fund conference or symposia-related expenses up to $5000.

Non-profit organizations, civic groups, public institutions, universities, undergraduate liberal arts colleges, graduate student organizations, and academic groups located in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin all are eligible. We especially are interested in proposals that host events to bring together diverse and underrepresented voices and observers of American culture and society that include artists, community activists, public intellectuals, scholars, and teachers. We also welcome proposals that provide opportunities for undergraduate students to learn more about American Studies and that encourage creative presentations as opposed to the traditional panel format. We are especially interested in conferences that may provide an opportunity to develop a special issue of American Studies based on papers, panels, or discussions that emerge out of the conference.

As co-sponsors of the conference, MAASA requests that a member of its executive board be a member of the conference planning committee, that space be available at the conference for a MAASA board meeting, and that time be allocated for graduate student members of the organization to organize a panel. MAASA will work with the conference planners to choose the winner of the Katzman-Yetman award, a prize for the best paper and presentation by a graduate student; this award includes $250 and review by the journal American Studies.

Proposals must include

*  The dates and site for the proposed conference or symposia
*  Information about the host organization(s)
*  Description of the target audience(s)
*  Description of the conference or symposia theme and its relevance to questions integral to studies of American culture and society
*  Discussion of anticipated goals and outcomes of the event
*  Detailed budget
*  Contact information

Proposals should be sent to Jane Simonsen (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) and will be accepted only electronically and only until the call deadline at 11:59 pm central standard time on Monday, March 1, 2010.  We expect to announce the winning proposal in April 2010.
