Resources: Abstracts of American Studies Dissertations

By University | By Year

Green, Susan Marie. "Zoot Suiters: Past and Present," Program in American Studies, University of Minnesota, June 1997.

The dissertation revolves around the examination of how the zoot suit, its wearers, and representations of both, changed as the suit moved communities in the twentieth century, being influenced by differences in region, time period, class, gender, ethnicity, and media. The dissertation is divided into six chapters focusing on representations in photography/art, cartoons/comics, literature, music, and film. A general history of the fashion in eleven countries and general non-media specific theories and methodology are discussed in the Introduction. The project demonstrates the value of popular culture, international inquiry, and interdisciplinary inquiry to the field of American Studies.
