Griffin, John J. "Yours in His Service: H. Orton Wiley as Evangelical Theologian and Educator," American Studies, University of New Mexico, December 22, 1997.
Henry Orton Wiley (1877-1961) was not long in assuming the role of spokesperson for the Church of the Nazarene. Joining the denomination in 1905, he soon proved a capable formulator and messenger of Nazarene doctrine and polity. Moreover, Wiley witnessed a turbulent time in American society caused by preparation for and recovery from World Wars I and II. He was also on hand during an equally disruptive chapter in national religion as it met challenges within and without its ranks. As an accomplished educator and Wesleyan/Armenian theologian, H. Orton Wiley was qualified to articulate the Nazarene response to issues responsible for America’s ecumenical in-fighting such as evolution and higher criticism. This dissertation is more than a mere statement of Nazarenedom’s views on these volatile issues. It is an overview of one Holiness denomination’s perspectives on contemporary trends in American religious culture. But it is also the biography of a significant Evangelical intellectual, unreserved in his convictions regarding Holiness teachings.
