This is a collection of diverse critical essays about the relationship of working-class consciousness and identity to cultural and educational practices. Employing a range of intersecting genres and rhetorical and narrative voices, including essays on pedagogy, technology, work, labor history, and women’s writings, I offer models for using rather than discarding working-class identity. By juxtaposing bildung with “working-class,” I seek to reimagine modern and postmodern conceptions of the self through the shared and collective experiences of class. I emphasize working-class experiences as an epistemology, a way of knowing and a body of knowledge, that is critical to any shared academic, social, and democratic practices.
