Grittner, Frederick K. "White Slavery: Myth, Ideology, and American Law," University of Minnesota, November 1986.
An historical, cultural, and legal examination of white slavery (forced prostitution) in America since the late nineteenth century, with attention given to its symbolic importance. The work looks at the origins of the white-slave reform movement, the moral panic over the problem during the Progressive Era, and the history of the federal Mann Act. As a cultural myth, white slavery contains ideological expressions concerning prostitution, sexuality, gender, race, and morality. The study draws on the sociology of law to interpret legal cases, reform literature, and popular expressions of white slavery (film, fiction, song).
