Evans, Timothy Henry. "Western Saddlemaking: History, Technology, Innovation," Folklore and American Studies Program, Indiana University, May 1995.
Since the 1950s, Western saddlemaking has increasingly moved from traditional to collectors markets. An example is the “Sheridan style” saddle of Sheridan, Wyoming. The history, techniques, and traditional styles of western saddlemaking are first described. The focus shifts to saddlemaker Don King, using oral history and close analysis of his work to document his creation of the “Sheridan style” from older styles. Finally, King’s influence on other saddlemakers is described, and the “Sheridan style” as practiced by the Sheridan saddlemaking community. In response to mass production, the craft of saddlemaking has transformed itself through a complex interplay of tradition, innovation, markets, and taste cultures.
