Saunders, Gerda. "We’ll Get to Now Later," English Department with a concentration in American Studies, University of Utah, June 1996.
These stories depict characters at moments when they realize they are born into history, into a wedge of space-time that unfolds without their permission, into families, social organizations, and political dispensations not of their choosing. The first seven stories deal with characters living in or trying to leave South Africa in the years preceding Mandela’s release. In other stories characters experience violent political events colored by a racism imbibed together with, for example, a love for the natural world. The last two stories trace the desire to overcome limitations of place and time in the lives of characters associated with well-known historical figures.
