Woods, Marianne Berger. "Wallace Nutting Photographs: Creating Myths for a New Century," Art History, Graduate School of the Union Institute, September 1999.
This dissertation addresses the life and oeuvre of the preacher/photographer Wallace Nutting (1861-1941) within the sociocultural context of the era in which he lived and worked. Nutting was an important popular figure whose output spanned many different activities and disciplines: writing, publishing, photography, furniture and ironwork reproductions, and historic preservation. His primary focus was on the Colonial era of United States history, though trips to Europe and the Holy Lands provided inspiration for representations of foreign landscape and genre scenes. Central to this study are the photographs Nutting took of women in American interiors situated close to home and hearth at a time when the New Woman was emerging as a modern phenomenon.
