Latta, Judi Moore. "Wade in the Water-The Public Radio Series: The effects of the Politics of Production on Sacred Music Representations," American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park, May 1999.
This dissertation examines the cultural impact a team of eight African American women had on production of a 26-part series of radio documentaries, Wade in the Water: African American Sacred Music Traditions, from National Public Radio and the Smithsonian Institution (1994). The dissertation argues that acting as a community of cultural workers, the women made choices based upon their identities and that constructed radio representations resembled and differed from face-to-face encounters with communities. Borrowing from cultural studies, media studies, folklore, and ethnomusicology, the study uses textual analysis and methods of ethnography including participant observation, interviews, life stories, and introspection.
