Darling, Patricia A. "Turning East: Converts and Movements in the Twin Cities in the 1970s," University of Minnesota, December 1987. Advisor: Roland A. Delattre (16, 2, 3, 22)
The dissertation records and analyzes the history and evolution of the seven groups of Eastern persuasion which were active in the Twin Cities in the early 1970s and into the 1980s. After a general history of Eastern religions in America and a 1960s cultural context chapter, the following groups are individually examined: the Sufis, Divine Light Mission, Satsang, Meditation Center, East West Macrobiotics, Tibetan Buddhist Center, and Minnesota Zen Center. The dissertation places Eastern conversion in the context of the Vietnam War decade and outlines the process by which such groups became viable religious options. The work attempts to describe and analyze the converts, what they learned and participated in, the beliefs and values they were exposed to, and the behaviors and values their teachers offered by way of example.
