Thomas, Karin. "Traveling Eyes: African American Travelers Create a World, 1789-1930," American Studies, Yale University, May 2001.
This dissertaion will examine the figure of the traveler in several forms of black travel writing, spanning a period from 1790-1930. It argues that african americans possess a well-established tradition of travel writing in the late eighteenth century. While these texts have been read as analogous to slave narratives, these travel text do not fit the slave narravtive paradigm; instead, they belong in a new paradigm that examines the ambigous, although significant role of free blacks during the years of Anglo-American expansion in te New World. Black travel writing contests a race-based identity used to define the presence and ecperience of African Americans, as dictated by Anglo-American economic and cultural models of the New World. These authors capitalize on these very points of culural contention by emphasizing the role of trade and transaction in their own narratives of personal possession.
