MacKenzie, Gordene Olga. "Transsexualism in America: A Tremor in the Fault Line of Gender," University of New Mexico, January 1991. Advisor: Jane Caputo (2, 21, 18)
This work focuses on what transsexual ideology, individual transsexuals and transgenderists and mass manufactured images of transsexuals in the media reveal about contemporary gender attitudes in America from 1950-1991. The study progresses from the medicalization of transsexuals to the cries of liberation from the contemporary Gender Movement. Differences are established between the manufactured image of transgenderists and the socio-political reality of being a transgenderist at tee end of the 20th century in America. An interdisciplinary methodology incorporating social history, sexology, medicine, psychology, popular culture analysis, semeiotics, and socio-cultural analysis is combined with my research in the cross gender community over the last ten years.
