Butler, Kathleen. "Tradition and Discovery: The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent," History of Art Department, University of California, Los Angeles, May 1994.
John Singer Sargent’s watercolors of Italy, Florida, the Near East, and the Simplon Pass elicit questions regarding his choice of medium and subject matter, and his position as a professional artist in the United States and Britain. Why, for example, did Sargent discontinue his thriving portrait practice almost entirely after 1907, choosing instead to concentrate on watercolors and murals until his death in 1927? And, what position does Sargent’s watercolor production occupy in his oeuvre? Through Sargent’s watercolors this dissertation examines issues pertaining to his career, to the professional and amateur practice of watercolor in the United States and Britain, and more broadly, to the history of American art.
