Fox, Stephen Danforth. "Toxic Chemicals and Stress: Anatomy of an Out-of-Court Settlement for Women Workers at GTE-Lenkurt Electronics Plant," University of New Mexico, May 1988. Advisor: Vera Norwood (2,22,20)
This dissertation is a case study of claims of occupational disablement due to toxic exposure in electronics manufacturing. 115 workers, 75% Hispanic, settled out of court in 1987 under secret terms. This study preserves much of that record. Interviews, medical records, depositions and laboratory tests reveal a continuity in working conditions and health complaints between these U.S. workers and workers in Asian facilities of multinational high-tech corporations. Their disablement, difficult to distinguish from effects of chronic stress, is hidden behind barriers of class, gender, and ethnicity, as well as political and value conflicts between medical and legal professionals.
