Jackson, Leon. "The Two Worlds of William Wells: Ideology and Economy in the Early American Republic of Letters," English Literature, Oxford University, November 1993.
This study explores the nature of literary and cultural change in Boston between the 1790s and 1820s through an analysis of the life and business of William Wells, Jr., who was one of the city’s leading publishers and men of letters. The first half of the dissertation examines Wells’s education in England and America, and considers the importance of republican political thought, neoclassical aesthetics and liberal Christianity in his decision to enter the book trade. The second half looks at how these principles mutated and changed in a modern direction as Wells sought to implement them in his publishing business.
