Toth, Csaba. "The Transatlantic Dialogue: 19th-Century American Utopianism and Europe," University of Minnesota, 1991. Advisor: David W. Noble (2, 11)
My work explores the undocumented extent to which 19th-century American utopianism influenced alternative and dominant discourses and practices in Europe, as opposed to the previous understanding of utopianism as a one-way influence of Europe upon America. I argue that 19th-century American utopianism reached its height of influence in Edward Bellamy and the international utopian dialogue his work inspired. I also deal with the transatlantic reception of utopians Laurence Gronlund, Ignatius Donnelly, and Daniel DeLeon. My inquiry, based on archival research in the U.S. and Europe, synthesizes the study of political ideologies, socio-cultural formations, and internationalism.
