Flagg, Jeffery B. "The Road Toward Wisdom: The Evolution of Land Ethics in the Adirondack State Park," American Culture Studies, Bowling Green State University, May 1999.

The purpose of this study was to identify and examine the emergence of land ethical attitudes in New York’s Adirondack State Park, and to reconcile them with larger environmental trends in American culture. The writings of wilderness philosopher Aldo Leopold provide the theoretical foundation for this study, particularly those regarding his development of a “land ethic,” a mode of cultural behavior that recognizes both the importance of ecosystemic integrity and the impact of human influence on the natural world. The Park today represents an example of the Leopoldian ethic put into practice, in light of evolving social, economic and environmental circumstances.
