Hibler, Anita. "The Publication of the Wilkes Reports, 1842-1877," George Washington University, June 1989. Advisor: Bernard Mergen (2, 20, 23)
From 1842 to 1877, the scientific results of the U.S. Exploring Expedition to Antarctica, Pacific Islands, and the Oregon Territory were published under the auspices of the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress. With the initial, staunch support of Senator Benjamin Tappan, Commander Charles Wilkes, U.S.N., wrote the voyage narrative and controlled other reports, including those by James Dwight Dana and Asa Gray. This ad hoc publishing organization, examined in terms of financial, artistic, and congressional records, produced more than twenty volumes and illustrates the working out of government support of science during the mid-nineteenth century.
