Gennari, John Remo. "The Politics of Culture and Identity in American Jazz Criticism," Department of American Civilization, University of Pennsylvania, August 1993.
This dissertation examines developments within the field of American jazz criticism from the 1930s through the 1980s. I analyze the discourse among the creators, critics, and consumers of jazz in the context of broader cultural and political issues: the social construction of race, race relations, cultural authority, and cultural nationalism. I trace the emergence in the late 1950s of an integrationist, consensus paradigm that seeks to transcend sectarianism within the jazz community at the same time as it challenges critiques of jazz from dominant intellectual circles. I then show how this model suffered a withering attack at the hands of African-American cultural nationalists in the 1960s, only to reemerge in full force in the 1980s.
