Stanley, Talmage A. "The Poco Field: Politics, Culture and Place in Contemporary Appalachia," American Studies Program, Emory University, May 1996.
This dissertation analyzes struggles for social justice in the Pocahontas Coalfields of McDowell County, West Virginia. My grandparents’ life in that place documents the failure of capitalism to provide a sustainable McDowell County future since 1945. Pierre Bourdieu, Raymond Williams, and oral histories of McDowell activists working for a democratic future in the 1990s suggest that place identity can enable a politics that rejects the social divisions that often define a middle-class future. Reading selected representations of place in Appalachian fiction, I argue that middle class hegemony often precludes models of place-based politics and a democratic Appalachian future.
