Maynard, W. Barksdale. "The Picturesque and American Architecture: A Reappraisal," Department of Art History, University of Delaware, May 1997.
This study reconsiders how the Picturesque shaped American architecture and thought, primarily during the years 1800-1860. Often slighted as a merely aesthetic system, the English architectural Picturesque in fact comprised a complex philosophy with profound consequences for American architecture. This may be measured by reference to a variety of written sources, including some seldom previously examined by scholars of architectural history. Subjects here considered include the cottage and the piazza, the log cabin and the primitive hut, Thoreau at Walden Pond, antiquarianism in literature and travel, the Colonial Revival, and historic preservation, all of which were influenced by the Picturesque.
