Morse, Susan I. "The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Urban Landscape, 1827-1927," Department of History, Temple University, May 2000.
The role of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in Philadelphia’s cultural landscape evolved as scientific and technological advances created unlimited opportunities for aesthetic expression and commercial expansion. Botanical acquisitions by members of Philadelphia’s upper class became a social amusement. The emergence of the middle class and promotion of horticulture as a proper activity provided a viable market for enterprising seedsmen and nurserymen. Interest in the promotion of the science of horticulture created a common ground for Philadelphia’s elite and men with commercial aspirations. The ideological meaning of nature shifted and created pragmatic changes in the ways that men related to and used the physical landscape. Pennsylvania Horticultural Society members utilized the urban landscape to advance the notions of civility and refinement and to secure Philadelphia’s place and the nation’s horticultural center.
