Alsaeed, Ibrahim H. "The Origin and Meaning of America's Special Relationship With Israel," University of Houston, December 1986 .
This dissertation analyzes the American attitude toward the idea of Zion, Palestine, the Middle East and Israel from the early American experience to the 1970s. The dissertation suggests that a continuity existed in British and American attitudes toward the idea of Zion, Palestine and the Middle East since the Reformation. Early proto-Zionists and modern Zionists both worked within the limits set by international politics and existing Western images of Palestine and the Middle East. Instead of following a model of moralist motives or pressure politics, the Zionist idea reflected the Western states’ world-view, which shaped the Zionist project of founding a Jewish state. The dissertation’s framework relies on concepts such as cultural images, crises in domestic and international politics, national interest, dependency and interdependency in foreign policy, and American political conservatism.
