DeBoer-Langworthy, Carol. "The Modern World of Neith Boyce: A Critical Documentary Edition of Her Autobiographical Writings," Graduate School of the Union Institute, July 1996.
This dissertation prepares three autobiographical documents by the America writer Neith Boyce (1872-1951) as a critical documentary edition: her “Autobiography” [1939?], “Diary—Italy 1903” [1903, revised 1939?], and “War Diary” [1914]. Boyce was a short story writer, playwright, novelist, and essayist who belonged to artistic and literary avant-garde groups in Greenwich Village, Florence, Chicago, and on Cape Cod. As she originally prepared these documents, Boyce disguised and blurred individuals’ identities even while hewing close to the facts of her childhood and young womanhood, providing portraits of significant players in the changes in American cultural attitudes during the early part of this century. The resulting memoir/diary/autobiography demonstrates that life writing can serve several disciplines and forms: social history, literature, and memoir.
