Johnston, Jessica. "The Intimate Battle for Self Control: A Phenomenological and Cultural Analysis of Weight Consciousness in American Society," University of Maryland, College Park, January 1991. Advisor: John Caughey (2, 3, 23)
This dissertation is an ethnographic exploration of the interaction between social control and self control, between macro and micro structures. The analysis focuses on medical, therapeutic, and consumer mandates for weight control in both popular literature an the private world of thirty-three white, middle-class, men and women who consider their bodies to be unacceptable. The interrelated and at times contradictory cultural mandates used by these individuals structure their experience of their bodies and their “selves” as they attempt to transform both into socially acceptable forms. The individuals both accommodate and resist the cultural mandates, are both victims and active agents in the (re) production of their culture.
