Suter, Scott Hamilton. "The Importance of Making Progress: The Potteries of Emanuel Suter, 1851-1897," American Studies Program, George Washington University, August 1994.
This study of a nineteenth-century Virginia potter examines the concept of “progress” and what it meant to a craftsman and farmer in the culturally transitional region of the Shenandoah Valley. Documentary and material evidence shows that Emanuel Suter strove to make progress in all aspects of his life; this dissertation examines the important role that region played in shaping his thinking, and the manifestation of progressive thought in his pottery works and wares. Ultimately, this dissertation explores the ways that knowledge travels from region to region and the effects that such information has on craftspeople, the traditional ways of performing their craft, and the communities in which they live.
