Barney, Deborah Verdice Smith. "The Gospel Announcer and the Black Gospel Music Tradition," Department of English, Michigan State University, May 1994.

Since the 1930s gospel announcers (disc jockeys) have been vital to the Black gospel tradition by serving as concert hosts, the key media disseminators of gospel music, and as sources of inspiration. Their performances are guided by a pervasive Black aesthetic. This dissertation offers a performance-centered analysis with special attention to the manipulation of the physical realm, text, sound, and time. The data were culled from interviews, taped performances, and literary sources. Similarities and differences are also drawn between the work of gospel announcers and that of preachers and gospel singers.
