Crockett, Rosemary F. "The Garies and Their Friends: A Study of Frank J. Webb and his Novel," History of American Civilization, Harvard University, May 1998.
The Garies and Their Friends (1857), the second novel published by an African American, focuses on life in the free colored community of antebellum Philadelphia. This dissertation 1) presents biographical information on author Frank J. Webb, 2) examines some of the novel’s major themes, such as mixed marriages, passing, and mob violence, in the context of other antebellum novels, 3) compares the fictional picture of discrimination in education, transportation, religion, employment, and other areas with the historical record, and 4) provides information on the novel’s publication and reception.
