Nemanic, Mary Lou. "The Fourth of July on the Minnesota Iron Range: Small Town America and Working-Class Nationalism, 1892-1992," American Studies Program, University of Minnesota, June 1996.
This dissertation reexamines Americanization, ethnicity, and mass culture, arguing that these can be seen as radical rather than conservative processes. Using the Minnesota Iron Range as a case study and the Fourth of July as a window on the construction of American identity by immigrant groups, this thesis emphasizes the subcultural development of mostly Southern and Eastern European groups who constructed a pluralistic, class-based nationality evident in Fourth of July rituals rooted in European festive culture. This interdisciplinary study utilizes oral histories, newspapers, photographs, and archival records to explore the evolution of Fourth of July rituals from 1892 to 1992.
