Hoffman, Nancy Everill. "The Construction of William Bartram's Narrative Natural History: A Genetic Text of the Draft Manuscripts for Travels," American Civilization Program, University of Pennsylvania, August 1996.
An almost unknown and unpublished draft manuscript of William Bartram’s Travels (1791) reveals the process of constructing a natural history text as a philosophic pilgrimage in nature, enhanced by tales of adventure. A partial Manuscript in Bartram’s handwriting is the basis of this study which reveals important differences between his draft for the book and the published text of Travels. Selective deletions from Bartram’s Manuscript show where his Quakerly values, pietistic musings, and lengthy philosophic analogies were judged as inappropriate for the reading public, a reflection of post-Revolutionary cultural change. Bartram’s original voice in the Manuscript was substantially altered, producing a more coherent but less poetic and immediate text. Thus Bartrum’s contribution to American nature writing can be understood more accurately in the draft Manuscript, now accessible in the genetic text.
