Harper, Donna/Akiba Sullivan. "The Complex Process of Crafting Langston Hughes's 'Simple,' 1942-1949," Emory University, April 1988. Advisor: Peter W. Dowell (1, 2, 12)

Simple Speaks His Mind and the other four collections of Langston Hughes’s popular and critically acclaimed Simple stories offer convenience but cannot reveal the historical context or the aesthetic development afforded by examining the original Chicago Defender columns, unedited drafts of the first collection, and correspondence between Hughes and his editor at Simon and Schuster. The primary materials from 1942 to the end of 1949 reveal Hughes’ determination to publish a character true to the mood and values of African-Americans, yet able to effectively reach the widest possible audience.
