Guenter, Scot M. "The American Flag 1777-1924: Cultural Shifts from Creation to Codification," University of Maryland, College Park, May 1986. Advisor: R. Gordon Kelly (11, 23)
This study traces shifts in the presentation, reproduction, and usage of the flag of the United States in art, music, legend, custom, and ritual from the first Flag Resolution in 1777 through the Second National Flag Conference in 1924. Based on the theoretical foundations of Berger and Luckmann, emphasizing that the significance of the flag is culturally determined, the dissertation explores how contributions of specific individuals, groups, and institutions helped elevate the flag to a position of symbolic prominence in American civil religion, a position that it maintains today.
