Ryan, Carol Crawford. "Summering: Everyday Life in a Vacation Community, 1909-1985," University of Minnesota, April 1987.
Ethnographic field research was carried out in a summer community in northern Minnesota in order to construct a social history of a vacation group which has come together on an annual basis for seventy-six years. The structure and social organization of the community, everyday life, leisure activities, and the meaning of the place to its residents are discussed. It is argued that hidden temporary communities like this colony are one form of alternative community in America which individuals have created to meet personal and social needs.
