Caffrey, Margaret Mary. "Stranger in this Land: The Life of Ruth Benedict," University of Texas at Austin, May 1986. Advisor: William Goetzmann (22, 10, 3)
This dissertation is a cultural biography of anthropologist Ruth Benedict (1887-1948), studying the impact of cultural expectations on Benedict as an individual, and in turn, the influence of her ideas in changing these expectations. Benedict’s work had a catalytic effect, confirming the paradigm change from Victorian to Modern values in twentieth-century America, gathering together and setting in place the orienting concepts of the new underlying set of twentieth-century values. While having such a decided impact on American culture at large, Benedict’s work failed to establish a corresponding set of orienting concepts for anthropology beyond her lifetime in spite of her efforts to do so.
