Scott, Robert M. "St. George Tucker and the Development of American Culture in Early Federal Virginia 1790-1824," George Washington University, 1990. Advisor: Marcus Cunliffe/Doris Green Schwoerer (2, 11, 23)
This study examines Tucker’s relationship to the culture of federal Virginia by reviewing his poems, Blackstone’s Commentaries, essays, and plays. Developing his thought from classical republican traditions, he wrote and helped evolve an ideology which became the unique cultural system called Jeffersonian republicanism. analysis of the writings supports the thesis that Tucker’s greatest contributions to his culture were his singular devotion to the republican ideal and his untiring efforts to change ideal to reality. Tucker’s manuscript letters, journal, notebooks, case reports, and law practice notes in the Tucker-Coleman Collection at the University of William and mary were consulted.
