Natanson, Barbara Orbach. "Spot the Hyphen? Representations of Immigrants and Members of Ethnic groups in Illustrated Newspaper and Magazine Stories, 1880-1925," American Studies Department, University of Maryland, College Park, April 1999.
To what extent did shifting immigration trends and developing illustration technologies intersect between 1880 and 1925? Did newspaper and magazine illustrations serve as an important medium for conveying impressions of immigrants? Sampling issues of four newspapers and two general interest magazines, this study assessed how prominently and consistently images of immigrants appeared in illustrated stories, who received the most coverage, when, the settings in which immigrants appeared, the activities most often depicted, and themes prevalently represented in associated text. The study went on to explore interrelationships among images, text, and context, focusing on a subset of stories dealing with processes of immigration and assimilation.
