Pimple, Kenneth D. "Speech and Moral Character: A Study of Selected Preachers in Nineteenth-Century American Literature," Indiana University, 1990. Advisor: Sandra Dolby Stahl (10, 12, 2)
This thesis examines the relationship between speaking and moral character as represented in selected works of 19th-century American fiction. Questions addressed include: How does an individual’s speech create or reveal his/her moral character? How is morality established, presented, and perceived in speech? How is this relationship exploited by authors? The focus is on preachers because both moral character and the use of speech are clearly foregrounded for members of the clergy. Works studied include the humor of the Old southwest, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Edward Eggleston’s Roxy and The Circuit Rider, and Harold Frederic’s The Damnation of Theron Ware.
