McCleary, Ann Elizabeth. "Shaping a New Role for the Rural Woman: The Home Demonstration Club Program in Augusta County, Virginia, 1917-1940," American Civilization Program, Brown University, May 1996.
This dissertation examines the impact of the home demonstration club movement on the lives, work, and homes of rural women in one Virginia county from the program’s inception through 1940. Utilizing state and local sources, including oral histories and material culture, this research reveals that county agents and the middle-class women and girls who joined home demonstration and 4-H clubs used the program to create new opportunities for themselves in a rapidly-changing rural world. By expanding their roles as producers and community activists, club women hoped to retain and further develop sources of power and prestige on the farm and in the community.
