Niatum, Duane. "Shamanism, Sacred Narratives, The Sea, and The Cedar in the Art of John Hoover, Aleut Sculptor," Program in American Culture, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, November 1996.
This dissertation studies the work and thought of John Hoover, an American Indian sculptor who works mostly in Western red cedar. This study combines art history and anthropology in order to distinguish those influences that inform Hoover’s art, namely, the sea, sacred narratives, and shamanism. Hoover’s life history and ethnographic data on Northwest Coast Indians are essential to my discussion of his sculpture. By examining the body of Hoover’s sculpture, I determine how this modern artist integrates traditional Indian art motifs into contemporary forms. The influence of Russian icon sculpture has a role in he analysis as do non-native sources.
