Westfall, Sarah B.. "Senior-level College and University Administrators' Conceptions of Institutional Quality: An Exploratory Study," Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies,, Indiana University, May 1995.

The purpose of this study was to explore what a group of senior-level college and university administrators think quality is. Study findings indicated that 1) study participants understood institutional quality in widely variant ways which have changed over time and are significantly influenced by participants’ professional background, the institutional context, the foci of institutional competition, and the presence of a strategic planning process, 2) participants’ conceptions of institutional quality informed their resource (i.e., time and money) allocation decisions and provided criteria for their individual decision making and conduct, and 3) participants perceived a greater degree of similarity between their own conceptions of quality and the conceptions of their institutional colleagues than was supported by the data.
