Knupfer, Walter Richard. "Running in Place: An Excursion into Self and Community," University of Iowa, December 1989.
This creative thesis combines personal and voice and cultural criticism in essays and poems exploring the contemporary self’s relationship to the changing community. Changes in the community are identified in the essays within the social and historical contexts of changing institutions, particularly land, industry, the service-retail sector, and the hospital. The narrator explores a one-mile stretch of land within a midwestern community and shows, in the lyric voice of the self through poetry, the reactions the essays engender. Ethnographic fieldwork is used to balance this voice by the addition of others experiencing the same changes in work and leisure. The historical analysis creates the contexts of corporate, technological, and scientific change-all represented in the mile stretch-to which the voices respond.
