This dissertation is a literary history of apocalyptical imagery in the North and South during the Civil War. The belief that this war was the earth’s last battle pervaded literature in both regions, also appearing frequently in slave songs and narratives. In order to demonstrate the extent of apocalyptical belief during the war, this dissertation examines popular fiction, poetry, and songs; published sermons, political tracts, personal journals, and family correspondence. The apocalyptical rhetoric of each faction in the war signaled an upheaval in existing social, religious, and political systems, and it waned as the concept of the war as a revolution faded.
